In, India, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka are the major states cultivating spices in larger areas. Among the spice growing states, Tamil Nadu is one of the major producers and has maximum area under spices and condiments. The major spices grown in Tamil Nadu are turmeric, fenugreek, coriander, chili, pepper, cardamom, garlic and ginger. There are about 63 spices which are widely grown in India and almost all spices are being grown in Tamil Nadu because of the favorable, varied agro-climatic conditions. The black pepper and tree spices are being grown in the hilly tracts of Sheoveroys, palani hills,  hills, Pechiparai, Courtallam, Mahendragiri hills and other parts of Eastern Ghats. The climatic conditions prevailing in the plains of Tamil Nadu like Ramnatha puram, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli are conducive for the cultivation of rainfed spices such as chillies and seed spices. Turmeric is being cultivated predominantly in Erode, Coimbatore and Salem district of Tamil Nadu.



In Tamil Nadu a variety of spices like Coriander, Chillies, Cardamom, Turmeric, Pepper, Tamarind are grown. Minor spices like Ginger, Cloves, Garlic, Mint are also being encouraged in Tamilnadu. Here Chillies is main spice exported from Tamilnadu. But, a major percentage of cardamom is produced in Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, Virudhunagar and Thirunelveli districts of Tamil nadu. Ginger, Garlic and Pepper are the uncommon condiment developed in Dindigul and The Nilgiris regions. Tamil Nadu is the biggest manufacturer of Clove and Tamarind in India. There are number of spice companies in tamilnadu who engaged in Spice Exporting and domestic supply. According to Business Line report, Tamil Nadu possess approximate 10% of the aggregate production of spices in India and is the second biggest maker and exporter of turmeric as the normal growth of turmeric in the state is more than three lakh tons for every year.
